Behind the Door

Behind the door
you pull on the rope of longing
until tears come
in this well
is your reflection –

Hinter der Tür
ziehst du an dem Sehnsuchtsseil
bis Tränen kommen
In dieser Quelle spiegelst du dich –

  1. How do feel about the Holocaust and what made you want to translate for Nellie’s poems. Is there any story behind this.

  2. The poem “Behind the Door” by Nellie Sachs

    Behind the door
you pull on the rope of longing
    until tears come
    in this well
    is your reflection

    Dear Nellie,
I understand the meaning of this poem. I understand how the person behind the door pulled and tugged at your emotions until they could get you to cry to feel stronger. I understand why they stood behind the door because deep down they know its wrong and don’t want to see you break down and they reflect on terrible thing they are doing and that’s why they hide behind the door. Also I get hands and what you mean by door. It means a transition of a threshold and the people behind the door are trying to get you past threshold or a boundary. Another thing is the well and the water in the well are your tears and as the person the door makes you cry they see themselves in the water of the well. Another thing is the person being behind the door because the person is trying to hide from what is really happening and they are trying to trick themselves of what they are doing. Also your emotions are tied to the rope that the person is tugging on.
