Goodbye

Goodbye –
a word bleeding from two wounds.
Yesterday still a sea-word
with the sinking ship
a sword in its heart –
yesterday still a word
stabbed by the shooting stars in their death throes –
midnight-kissed throats
of nightingales –

Today – two rags hanging
and human hair in a claw hand
that tore –

And we, bleeding yet –
bleeding to death on you –
hold your source in our hands.
We, a mighty army bidding adieu,
building up your darkness –
until death says : Silence! –
yet here –
we must bleed on.

Abschied
aus zwei Wunden blutendes Wort.
Gestern noch Meereswort
mit dem sinkenden Schiff
als Schwert in der Mitte –
Gestern von Sternschnuppensterben
durchstochenes Wort –
mitternachtgeküsste Kehle
der Nachtigallen –

Heute – zwei hängende Fetzen
und Menschenhaar in einer Krallenhand,
die riss –

Und wir Nachblutenden –
Verblutende an dir –
halten deine Quelle in unseren Händen.
Wir Heerscharen der Abschiednehmenden
die an deiner Dunkelheit bauen –
bis der Tod sagt: schweige du –
doch hier ist: weiterbluten!

This poem seems to say the second meaning to goodbye. Most people think goodbye is the word you say when you are leaving a place like a school to go somewhere else. But in this poem it is saying goodbye as in leaving earth. “A word bleeding from two wounds.” This line two me means it is a wound when someone dies or just leaves home. They bleed goodbye from one wound when they were forced from their home. The other wound is them dying and leaving earth. There is also a word and it is adieu. This is just another word saying goodbye. So it is saying from the mighty army. And when it says we must bleed on it is saying we must remember and never forget the pain.
